SIERRA VISTA — While many federal officials claim the American border with Mexico is safe, a retired U.S. Border Patrol Supervisory Agent vehemently disagrees.

“It’s more dangerous than I’ve every seen it during my 26 years in the Border Patrol,” Zach Taylor said Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to more than 40 people at the Cochise County Building in Sierra Vista at an event arranged by the Cochise County Republican Committee, Taylor said the Border Patrol, which is now under the Department of Homeland Security and not under the Department of Justice as it was prior to 9/11, has become more of a political tool for those who do not seem to be willing to address border issues as a law enforcement matter, he said.

One of the founders of the National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers, he said agents of the former organization he served are being denied the right to do their jobs in as federal law enforcement agents.

This is particularly true when access to portions of federal land along the border is denied to agents not only trying apprehend illegal immigrants who are seeking jobs in the U.S., but more importantly the growing criminal elements involved in a number of smuggling activities, Taylor said.

During his career he worked in the field, supervising “from a truck,” actions involving the agency’s Nogales Border Patrol Station.

He still lives in Santa Cruz County and his talk was mainly about that specific area as a major pathway for hardened criminals supporting different drug cartels.

What people in the U.S. have to be wary of is the Mexican criminal activity from Mexico, which is growing in America, Taylor said.

In 1952, a congressional act granted the Border Patrol
unlimited access to private and state lands from the border up to 100 miles into the U.S., he said.

But now agents are denied law enforcement rights on federal land in the same area and, as many in Arizona know, many large areas of federal land abut the border and continue into the state for many miles, Taylor said.

The Mexican criminal gangs know the constraints facing the agents and that is why many of the federal land areas along the border have become access points for illegal activities, he said.

For Americans to think that Mexican gangs are only a problem on the border would be a mistake, the retired agent said.

In the United States, “2,500 cities have Mexican gangs,” he said.

Those gangs support different cartels and gangs in Mexico, meaning blood shed is not just limited along the border but also within the heartland of America, Taylor said.

Although the State Department has no direct oversight of the Border Patrol, it has interfered with the agency and other federal agencies in providing the correct information to the American public, so as not to upset the political leaders in Mexico, Taylor remarked.

As an example, reports by another federal agency, The U.S. Forest Service, concerning summer fires in Arizona, specifically the Monument Fire in Cochise County and the Murphy Complex Fire in Santa Cruz County, had statements that the fires were started by illegal immigrants excised from its reports on the direction of the State Department, he said, as he held up what he said was a copy of the report which has been removed from official files.

Firefighters working wildfires on federal land have reported they have been shot at during their attempts to put out a blaze, Taylor said.

Again such information is taken out of any official federal report, Taylor said.

The people who are crossing the border from Mexico into the U.S. now are not the same type as they were years ago, when even drug smugglers in those bygone eras did not carry weapons, Taylor said.

Saying he has twice testified before congressional committees and has escorted members of Congress along the border so they can see the real-world people of Arizona and the Border Patrol face, Taylor emphasized his growing concern of harden criminal activities taking deeper roots in Arizona to the detriment of the state’s citizens.

While he is most familiar with Santa Cruz County aspects of illegal activities, he said he will be studying Cochise County between Douglas and the New Mexico state line soon.

America’s relationship with Mexico is at a point where traffic coming out of the neighbor to the south will create more harm than good unless the federal government stops ignoring the real issue, which is that Mexican drug cartels and gangs do not care who is hurt in the process of making a profit.

During his presentation, he showed photos of dismembered bodies and heads, some of which were found in the U.S. because of gangs and cartels fighting each other over lucrative smuggling routes.

“The border has become lawless. The whole dynamic has changed,” Taylor said of what he envisions as more horrific events happening in the U.S.

A proposed revision to Freedom of Information Act rules would allow federal agencies to lie to citizens and reporters seeking certain records, telling them the records don’t exist.

The Justice Department has proposed the change as part of a large revision of FOIA rules for federal agencies. Specifically, the rule would direct government agencies who are denying a request under an established FOIA exemption to “respond to the request as if the excluded records did not exist,” rather than citing the relevant exemption.

The proposed rule has alarmed government transparency advocates across the political spectrum, who’ve called it “Orwellian” and say it will “twist” public access to government.

In a public comment regarding the rule change, the ACLU, along with Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) and OpenTheGovernment.org, said the move “will dramatically undermine government integrity by allowing a law designed to provide public access to government information to be twisted to permit federal law enforcement agencies to actively lie to the American people.”

Anne Weismann, the chief counsel of CREW, said the Justice Department has a legitimate purpose behind the rules: to protect sensitive information about ongoing investigations. However, she said lying about the records “is an overbroad and improper response.”

“The problem is, if you’re a FOIA requester and the agency says they don’t have the records, you have no reason to doubt that,” Weismann said. “But if they cite an exemption, you have the option to sue.”

Those groups have suggested an alternate federal response that would not require any revisions to the rules. “We interpret all or part of your request as a request for records which, if they exist, would not be subject to the disclosure requirements of FOIA pursuant to section 552(c), and we therefore will not process that portion of your request.”

Conservative government watchdog Judicial Watch has also lambasted the proposed rules change. (RELATED: Obama admin. pulls references to Islam from terror training materials, official says)

The news is “not surprising, coming from the Obama administration,” said Christopher J. Farrell, director of investigations and research at Judicial Watch.

“The Obama administration is already doing it right now by actively misleading the public concerning White House visitor logs,” Farrell said. “Every day, the Obama administration misrepresents and conceals the true, complete record of who is going in and out of the White House — all the while proclaiming themselves champions of transparency. It’s truly Orwellian. The proposed rule change should be rejected.”

If the rule were to go into effect, it would likely be challenged in court. Courts have traditionally given the Justice Department fairly broad powers regarding records disclosure, but recent precedent may give the DOJ trouble.

In a case involving the FBI and records disclosure, U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney wrote that the “Government cannot, under any circumstance, affirmatively mislead the Court.”

Under current FOIA practice, the government may withhold information and issue a denial saying it can neither confirm nor deny the existence of records. Such a denial is known as a “Glomar response” — named after the legal battle between the Los Angeles Times and the CIA in the 1970s over records concerning the CIA’s attempts to salvage a sunken Soviet submarine.

Upon taking office, President Obama released a memorandum declaring his administration was “committed to operating with an unprecedented level of openness. Specifically, he pledged to bolster the strength of the FOIA act, calling it “the most prominent expression of a profound national commitment to ensuring an open government.”

The DOJ did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ever since I first laid eyes on the wind turbines west of Palm Springs, Calif., I’ve been captivated by the idea of wind-generated electricity.

The wind farms of central Kansas fascinated me as I rode past them on I-70 four years ago. It was an exciting new concept and it seemed like free energy to me. I thought anyone who opposed wind energy was a fool.

I had fallen into the liberal trap of letting my emotional response form my opinions on the issue. I thought it looked cool and bought into the seductive notion that wind farms would quickly pay for themselves and bring down the price of electricity with no damage to the environment.

And I was excited that Nordex, a German wind turbine company, chose Jonesboro as the home of its North American manufacturing facility.

Turns out, like most emotional-based arguments, it can’t stand up to the facts.

Now that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is trying to weasel out of lying to Congress about when he learned about the Fast and Furious gun-running scheme, it may be time to remind him that he is not above the law.

Richard Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, thought he was above the law when he participated in the plan to burglarize the Democrat National Headquarters in the Watergate and then conspired to cover up the caper.

Mitchell was subsequently convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and perjury and sentenced 2½ to 8 years in prison. The sentence was later reduced to one to four years and he was released on parole for medical reasons after serving only 19 months.

But the fact remains, the nation’s top law enforcement officer went to prison for breaking the laws he was sworn to uphold.

It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine Holder meeting a similar fate, given the mounting evidence that he may have been complicit in an illegal attempt to create bad press for the Second Amendment.

Filmmaker and propagandist Michael Moore is in the news again, this time making veiled threats against the rich for not wanting to give their money to people who have no inclination to work.

“The smart rich know they can only build the gate so high. And, and, sooner or later history proves that people when they’ve had enough aren’t going to take it anymore. And much better to deal with it nonviolently now, through the political system, than what could possibly happen in the future, which nobody wants to see,” Michael Moore said on Current TV’s “Countdown” program.

Moore was alluding to riots, which he was discussing with “Countdown” host Keith Olbermann prior to his comment to deal with things nonviolently now.

And once again my thoughts turn to Clint Eastwood’s warning to Moore at a National Board of Review awards dinner in New York six years ago.

"Michael Moore and I actually have a lot in common - we both appreciate living in a country where there's free expression,” he said.

Then fixing Moore with a cold steely glare, he added, "But, Michael, if you ever show up at my front door with a camera - I'll kill you."

The New York Daily News reported the audience erupted in laughter, and Eastwood grinned, and said, "I mean it."

Perhaps Moore would like to lead the charge at Eastwood’s house.

My BMW riding friend Rich Nathan sent this to me this morning. I always question stories like this that seem too good to be true, but this is the real deal. Nothing about it on Snopes and plenty of news stories validating it.

Has Dallas got a good idea or what??
Recently, (passed in May, 2008, went into effect Jan. 1, 2009) the City of Dallas, Texas, passed an ordinance stating that if a driver is pulled over by law enforcement and is not able to provide proof of insurance, the car is towed.
To retrieve the car after being impounded, they must show proof of insurance to have the car released. This has made it easy for the City of Dallas to remove uninsured cars.
Shortly after the "No Insurance" ordinance was passed, the Dallas impound lots began to fill up and were full after only nine days. 80 + % of the impounded cars were driven by illegals.
Not only must they provide proof of insurance to have their car released, they have to pay for the cost of the tow, a $350 fine, and $20 for every day their car is kept in the lot.
Accident rates are going down and... Dallas' solution gets uninsured drivers off the road WITHOUT making them show proof of nationality.
Wonder how the ACLU or the Justice Department will get around this one.

Peggy Noonan was a speech writer for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and has serious Republican credentials. That said, I’ve disagreed with her in recent years on several points, but I think she captured the zeitgeist of the nation in her piece this week in the Wall Street Journal.

I’ve omitted the first few paragraphs that deal with the Republican side of the debt ceiling issue. Here’s the heart of her message:

But that actually is not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about something that started to become apparent to me during the debt negotiations. It's something I've never seen in national politics.

It is that nobody loves Obama. This is amazing because every president has people who love him, who feel deep personal affection or connection, who have a stubborn, even beautiful refusal to let what they know are just criticisms affect their feelings of regard. At the height of Bill Clinton's troubles there were always people who'd say, "Look, I love the guy." They'd often be smiling—a wry smile, a shrugging smile. Nobody smiles when they talk about Mr. Obama. There were people who loved George W. Bush when he was at his most unpopular, and they meant it and would say it. But people aren't that way about Mr. Obama. He has supporters and bundlers and contributors, he has voters, he may win. But his support is grim support. And surely this has implications.

The past few weeks I've asked Democrats who supported him how they feel about him. I got back nothing that showed personal investment. Here are the words of a hard-line progressive and wise veteran of the political wars: "I never loved Barack Obama. That said, among my crowd who did 'love' him, I can't think of anyone who still does." Why is Mr. Obama different from Messrs. Clinton and Bush? "Clinton radiated personality. As angry as folks got with him about Nafta or Monica, there was always a sense of genuine, generous caring." With Bush, "if folks were upset with him, he still had this goofy kind of personality that folks could relate to. You might think he was totally misguided but he seemed genuinely so. . . . Maybe the most important word that described Clinton and Bush but not Obama is 'genuine.'" He "doesn't exude any feeling that what he says and does is genuine."

Maybe Mr. Obama is living proof of the political maxim that they don't care what you know unless they know that you care. But the idea that he is aloof and so inspires aloofness may be too pat. No one was colder than FDR, deep down. But he loved the game and did a wonderful daily impersonation of jut-jawed joy. And people loved him.

The secret of Mr. Obama is that he isn't really very good at politics, and he isn't good at politics because he doesn't really get people. The other day a Republican political veteran forwarded me a hiring notice from the Obama 2012 campaign. It read like politics as done by Martians. The "Analytics Department" is looking for "predictive Modeling/Data Mining" specialists to join the campaign's "multi-disciplinary team of statisticians," which will use "predictive modeling" to anticipate the behavior of the electorate. This wasn't the passionate, take-no-prisoners Clinton War Room of '92, it was high-tech and bloodless. Is that what politics is now? Or does the Obama re-election effort reflect the candidate and his flaws?

Mr. Obama seemed brilliant at politics when he first emerged in 2004. He understood the nation's longing for unity. We're not divided into red states and blue, he said, we're Big Purple, we can solve our problems together. Four years later he read the lay of the land perfectly—really, perfectly. The nation and the Democratic Party were tired of the Clinton machine. He came from nowhere and dismantled it. It was breathtaking. He went into the 2008 general election with a miraculously unified party and took down another machine, bundling up all the accrued resentment of eight years with one message: "You know the two losing wars and the economic collapse we've been dealing with? I won't do that. I'm not Bush."

The fact is, he's good at dismantling. He's good at critiquing. He's good at not being the last guy, the one you didn't like. But he's not good at building, creating, calling into being. He was good at summoning hope, but he's not good at directing it and turning it into something concrete that answers a broad public desire.

And so his failures in the debt ceiling fight. He wasn't serious, he was only shrewd—and shrewdness wasn't enough. He demagogued the issue—no Social Security checks—until he was called out, and then went on the hustings spouting inanities. He left conservatives scratching their heads: They could have made a better, more moving case for the liberal ideal as translated into the modern moment, than he did. He never offered a plan. In a crisis he was merely sly. And no one likes sly, no one respects it.

So he is losing a battle in which he had superior forces—the presidency, the U.S. Senate. In the process he revealed that his foes have given him too much mystique. He is not a devil, an alien, a socialist. He is a loser. And this is America, where nobody loves a loser.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Libya and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.
The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.
Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."
The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

In the continually developing scandal revolving around the Holder Justice Department and its Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (known as the ATF or BATFE), it has become clear that the government concocted a scheme to run U.S. guns into Mexico in order to prop up its false contention that 'U.S. guns are arming the drug cartels.' It has also become clear that the government intends to use the bogus figures resulting from the illegal gun running scheme to make a case for draconian new gun control measures.

However, even now, after ATF whistleblowers put their lives on the line to expose the plot, after a ton of evidence has surfaced that implicates persons at the very top of the ATF and even the DOJ, and after it has been shown that at least 2 cold-blooded murders were committed with the very guns the ATF placed into the hands of the cartels, some 'journalists' still don't get it.

One such journalist, writing for the Miami Herald, placed the blame for Mexican gun violence squarely on 'deadly U.S. guns' and proceeded to call for gun bans.

Such a statement merely follows the script set by the ATF and DOJ brain trust when 'Project Gunwalker' or 'Gunrunner,' or as it is known in ATF circles, 'Operation Fast and Furious,' was first envisioned. Thus, the journalist is now merely nothing more than a mouthpiece and a patsy for the criminals in the Justice Department who implemented this dastardly deceptive plot.

Blogger Mike Vanderboegh, one of the 2 who first broke this story, fired off a letter in response to the Miami Herald article, in which he made it crystal clear that gun owners have no intention of allowing another round of gun bans, particularly not as a result of government treachery.

In response to a question one reporter asked him concerning gun control, Vanderboegh replied, 'If you try to take our firearms, we will kill you.'

Vanderboegh goes further to delineate the firmly held convictions of today's gun owners, who intend to remain firm in their resistance to government tyranny:

There are a considerable number of Americans -- well armed Americans -- who will not obey any further restrictions on our God-given, natural and inalienable rights when it comes to firearms. If, as I believe, that number amounts to a mere three percent of American firearm owners, that means you'll have to kill three million of us in a bloody civil war to achieve what you want. That doesn't count all the tyrannical, gun-grabbing sonsabitches that we'll be forced to kill in righteous self-defense before we meet our Maker, and you should know that we intend -- and have the skills and the means -- to make that more than a one-to-one ratio. The pile of bodies of the next American civil war that you unthinkingly advocate would be in the millions, and we'd almost certainly win anyway, simply because our will to live free is greater than yours to oppress us.

Please, do not extrapolate from your own cowardice. You think that if you convince the federal government to carry out your policy that we'll just meekly submit, because you cannot conceive of resisting yourself. We, on the other hand, have principles that we are willing to die for. Unfortunately for some, that means we are willing to kill in defense of those principles as well.

Lest the pinheaded minions of the 'submit to the law no matter what' crowd view Vanderboegh's statement as 'proof' that he advocates a violent revolution, he has stated on numerous occasions that gun owners are smart enough not to instigate any such course of action. If the first shot is fired, it will have to come from government oppressors bent on forcing citizens into submission. But at that point, average Americans who are now armed to the hilt, especially since 2007, will fight back, and that will result in a bloody rampage that nobody wants.

Sean Hannity has apparently accepted the obviously manufactured Obama “birth certificate” as the real thing and now considers Dr. Jerome Corsi and his “Where’s the Birth Certificate?” book to be radioactive.

Dr. JEROME CORSI, the author whose book ""Where's the Birth Certificate? The Case that BARACK OBAMA is not Eligible to be President" suffered from the unfortunate timing of being set for release just after the president released his birth certificate to the public, contradicting the title and basis for the book, was uninvited to appear on PREMIERE RADIO NETWORKS' SEAN HANNITY show in the wake of the release, but he ended up on SALEM RADIO NETWORK's JANET MEFFERD show to defend his book and chide the OBAMA campaign office for selling "Made in the USA" mugs and T-shirts emblazoned with the birth certificate.

CORSI took the occasion to say that he was told by HANNITY's staff that the "birth certificate issue is no longer in the news cycle. Sean might want to revisit that issue after the DRUDGE headline today (about the mug sale)." The author continues to insist that "the left and the White House must still be very afraid of this book," despite the answer to the book's title now being available.

Hannity’s snub of Corsi and his refusal to see the most recent White House forgery for what it is calls into question Hannity’s judgment, his intelligence and his character. He’s either stupid or a coward.

Or he’s telling us his political convictions are as genuine as professional wrestling.

From next year, new phones and other hand-held devices will be required to be fitted with special chips to receive the alerts, which will also be sent by state and local authorities. Users will be able to opt out of every type of alert except those from the president, said the Federal Communications Commission.

The system will include alerts about missing children and will supersede all other phone traffic to avoid delays.

Mr. Obama, who has been dubbed the "texter-in-chief" thanks to his devotion to his BlackBerry and heavy use of text messages during his 2008 campaign, may face criticism from libertarians for the compulsory nature of the presidential alerts.

But officials see the system, known as Personal Localized Alerting Network, or Plan, as a logical progression from alerting the public via radio and television.

"The lesson that was reinforced on 9/11 was the importance of getting clear and accurate information to the public during a crisis," said Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, where the scheme will be deployed first next year. It will then move to Washington and most other large cities.

He called the alerts a "quantum leap forward in using technology to help keep people safe."

The warnings will have a unique signal and vibration, said officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The announcement of the new emergency alert system came in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death and a subsequent rise in security concerns in the city al-Qaeda attacked to devastating effect nearly ten years ago.

There is absolutely no way this is an unaltered PDF made from a scan of an original document.

There is some speculation that the fakery was intentionally obvious because Obama’s enemies in the White House want him to be found out.

Whatever. I’m not in a hurry to see Congress lose interest in fixing the economy just to chase this issue. The end result would be President Biden and an even worse economic situation.

The time to pursue this matter is after the Republicans regain control of the White House.

I’m absolutely stunned that they could be so amateurish and sloppy.

And even if you don’t have Illustrator, notice that the green background pattern was added and is not part of the original document because it doesn’t follow the curve of the page on the left. And that was not the name of that hospital in 1961.

But you’d better move quickly before they discover the mistake and replace it with a version where the history has been scrubbed.

I remember the first Earth Day, back in 1970.

It started innocently enough as a well-intentioned, harmless hippie holiday. People would go to the park, bask in the sunshine and contemplate ways to generate less waste and rid their environment of trash and pollution.

That was before it got hijacked by the Cult of Gaia and the oh-so-emotional purveyors of the junk science of man-caused global warming.

Somewhere along the line, people stopped worshipping the Creator and decided to deify His creation.

Today, it’s just another day to pity the well-meaning folks who think their green lifestyle somehow offsets pollution generated by Third World countries. And another day to hate and resist those who would wreck our economy, destroy our quality of life, and enrich themselves on the basis of the myth of climate change.

Day after day, I wade through news stories about the despicable stuff the malignant imbeciles of the world perpetrate on the rest of us.

And most of the time these acts and insults go unanswered and unpunished.

So I was practically giddy this afternoon when I discovered this delicious story about the Westboro Baptist Church morons getting their come-uppance when they showed up in a small Mississippi town to demonstrate at the funeral of a fallen Marine.

This is from thehayride.com. There’s no way I can improve on it, so here’s the full text:

On Saturday USMC Staff Sgt. Jason Rogers, who was killed in action in Afghanistan April 7, was buried in Brandon, Mississippi.

That, by itself, is a sadly unremarkable – though certainly noteworthy and solemn – occasion for us to mark.

And in fact when Sgt. Rogers’ body returned to Brandon it was greeted by hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, of well-wishers who gathered at the roadside to honor the fallen American hero. The dashboard camera from Mississippi state trooper Elmo Townsend’s cruiser gives an indication of the scene last Thursday.

What is most notable about Sgt. Rogers’ funeral in Brandon, however, is what didn’t happen.

You see, the troglodytes from Westboro Baptist Church had threatened to spew their poison at Sgt. Rogers’ funeral.

But the Westboro mob wasn’t on the scene, and Sgt. Rogers was laid to rest without incident – thank God.

Why weren’t there protestors?

Planning ahead by the locals, as it turns out.

From an Ole Miss sports message board, a tidbit of information…

A couple of days before, one of them (Westboro protestors) ran his mouth at a Brandon gas station and got his arse waxed. Police were called and the beaten man could not give much of a description of who beat him. When they canvassed the station and spoke to the large crowd that had gathered around, no one seemed to remember anything about what had happened.

Rankin County handled this thing perfectly. There were many things that were put into place that most will never know about and at great expense to the county.

Most of the morons never made it out of their hotel parking lot. It seems that certain Rankin county pickup trucks were parked directly behind any car that had Kansas plates in the hotel parking lot and the drivers mysteriously disappeared until after the funeral was over. Police were called but their wrecker service was running behind and it was going to be a few hours before they could tow the trucks so the Kansas plated cars could get out.

A few made it to the funeral but were ushered away to be questioned about a crime they might have possibly been involved in. Turns out, after a few hours of questioning, that they were not involved and they were allowed to go on about their business.

Fred Phelps, the disbarred lawyer and Democrat activist who leads the Westboro congregation, will undoubtedly pursue some form of legal action for the way his people were thwarted in Brandon. Let him try. There isn’t a jury in Mississippi which will see things his way.

This is a template for how to handle the Westboro people. If lawsuits don’t work, other means will. Whatever it takes to keep them from harassing bereaved military families on the day their fallen loved ones are laid to rest.

UPDATE: Some of the feedback we’ve received from this piece came along the lines that it’s inappropriate to refer to Fred Phelps as a “Democrat activist.”

We stand by that characterization. If anything, it’s an understatement.

Fred Phelps ran for major office in Kansas as a Democrat no less than four times. He ran for governor on the Democrat ballot in 1990, 1994 and 1998 and for senator in 1992. Phelps received 11,000 votes, or seven percent, in 1990, he received 5,000 votes, or three percent, in 1994 and he picked up 15,000 votes, or 15 percent, in 1998. And in the senatorial contest in 1992 he garnered 49,000 votes, or 30 percent. Phelps furthermore ran as a Democrat candidate for mayor of Topeka in 1993 and 1997.

Phelps also has been closely associated with Al Gore on several occasions throughout Gore’s career – Phelps’ son Fred, Jr. was a Gore delegate at the 1988 Democrat convention and the Phelpses hosted a Gore fundraiser in Topeka that year. Phelps claims that Westboro members “ran” Gore’s 1988 campaign in Kansas.

Phelps may not fit within the typical definition of “Democrat activist” some of our readers expect – but a six-time Democrat candidate is an activist Democrat. That is quite clear, as unknown to the public as it might be.

A sobering perspective

Government can’t balance a checkbook. They’re idiots. I know finance math. I do it for a living. And when I look at the numbers involved here, (and the interest!) it makes my head swim. Okay, for you non-accountants, when they start bandying numbers about on the news of 4 trillion such and such, and a hundred billion this and that, I know that your eyes glaze over. You think to yourself, “Oh, it is just the same old same old, bunch of politicians spending too much money, blah blah blah.”

NOOOOO!

Saying that this is the same old same old, is like saying that gophers digging up your lawn is the same level of disaster as Krakatoa. Over the last couple of years we’ve reached a whole new level of crazy. Our spending has gone insane. We’re spending more money, faster, than all of mankind, throughout all of recorded human history. Economists aren’t sure what’s going to happen, because this has never happened before. Ever. On Earth. We’ve strayed into strange new territory here and there are many possible outcomes if we don’t stray the hell back out. And don’t for a second think that any of those possible outcomes are remotely good. No. They range somewhere between the Great Depression and Mad Max.

Rush Limbaugh blasted President Barack Obama on Thursday, calling him a “vindictive little guy” and saying there was “nothing presidential” about his budget speech.
Limbaugh said he was offended that Obama had invited GOP Rep. Paul Ryan, who has offered his own budget plan, and other Republicans to sit in the front row at Wednesday’s address, “and then he proceeds to insult them.”
“It was a disgusting display. It was in no way presidential,” Limbaugh said on his talk show Thursday.
He said the incident revealed Obama’s real character.
“He’s not this cool, calm collected guy,” Limbaugh said. “Obama’s not a good guy. He’s a mean, vindictive little guy. He’s very cold.”
He also accused Obama of pandering to liberal supporters as part of his re-election strategy.
“His base is made up of people even more vile than he is,” Limbaugh said. “A lot of it is just walking human debris on the Democrat base side and they’ve got to be stoked.”

150 years ago this morning

On this date in 1861, at 4:30 in the morning, South Carolina forces opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor.

It was the beginning of the Civil War and a 150-year argument over the Constitutional right of states to secede from the Union. Some say the matter was settled at Appomattox, but many Constitutional scholars hold that since the states created the Federal government, they have an implicit right to withdraw from participation in it.

My four years in one of the western Confederate states and the growing perversion of the Interstate Commerce clause have piqued my interest in ways to curb the power of the Federal government and restore the proper authority to the states.

Coincidentally, Dick Morris has some thoughts on the matter that I find interesting and hopeful.

An aide to Vice President Joe Biden has apologized to a reporter who was locked in a closet for hours after he was invited to cover a Florida political fundraiser because they did not want him talking with the guests.

Spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander said the decision to hold local reporter Scott Powers there was a 'mistake'.

And she claimed an inexperienced staffer had put Powers in the closet instead of a 'hotel room' as was their normal practice.

As the unaware $500-a-head invitees dined on caprese crostini with oven-dried mozzarella and basil, rosemary flatbread with grapes honey and gorgonzola cheese, grilled chicken Caesar and garden vegetable wraps, last week, the veteran reporter was locked away.

The Orlando Sentinel reporter was ushered into the closet inside wealthy property developer Alan Ginsburg’s Winter Park mansion, after being told that Joe Biden and Senator Bill Nelson had not yet arrived.

They were due to speak to the audience to raise money for the 2012 elections.

He was told he could only come out when the politicians were ready to give their speeches.

The event was being held for Democrat senator Bill Nelson. Powers emailed from inside the closet: 'sounds like a nice party'

Powers told The Drudge Report: ‘When I'd stick my head out, they'd say, “Not yet. We'll let you know when you can come out.”’

After 90 minutes he was allowed out to hear Biden and Nelson speak for 35 minutes, before being taken back to the closet for the remainder of the event.

From inside his temporary prison Powers emailed his office from his cell phone: ‘Sounds like a nice party.’

When Ginsburg – who has supported both Democrat and Republican candidates in the past – learnt of the treatment that took place in his house, he called the reporter.

Powers said: ‘[Ginsburg] said he had no idea they'd put me in a closet and was very sorry.

‘He said he was just following their lead and was extremely embarrassed by the whole thing.’

Today Ms Alexander followed suit.

She said Power has accepted her 'unequivocal apology' made shortly after the fundraiser.

'This was the unfortunate mistake of an inexperienced staffer and the vice president's office has made sure it will never happen again,' she said.

She said pool reporters are usually given 'hotel rooms' when the Vice President speaks at private homes.

She explained that the closet was chosen because of its 'close proximity' to the room where Mr Biden was speaking, and that it had a table and chair where the reporter could work, as well as open space.

But she clarified: 'A hotel room, however, should not be a storage room'.

Some guests were shocked by the Vice President’s staff.

One emailed the paper saying: ‘I was in attendance at the Fundraiser and enjoyed a nice lunch.

‘If I had known there was a reporter stuffed in the closet, I would have been compelled to stand up and demand answers.

‘I would also like to know if this is actually legal to treat people like caged animals. I’m disgusted by these actions.’

Florida state law says kidnapping entails ‘forcibly, secretly or by threat confining, abducting or imprisoning another person against her or his will and without lawful authority.’

Powers said of his treatment: ‘It was frustrating and annoying that I was not given a chance to do my job fully and properly.

‘This was an extreme, and extremely inappropriate way of handling the press… it was essentially a rude and uncomfortable way to treat a reporter.’

He attempted to play down his treatment calling it ‘hardly unusual or shocking’ and confirmed that he received an apology from Ginsburg.

But he said the Vice President’s staff emailed him an apology which ‘I found far less satisfying than Ginsburg’s.’

The incident is especially embarrassing for the administration because it comes at a time when the White House has been condemning the treatment of journalists trying to report in Libya.

Just ten days ago, President Obama’s spokesman Jay Carney told reporters: ‘journalists should be protected and allowed to do their work.’

The Vice President’s office did not respond to requests for comment.

My initial response is doubtful. Then I compare him with who’s in the White House and I realize he has infinitely more real world experience as an executive and a leader than does a “community organizer” with a murky past.

I also think he raises a valid point on the Constitutional legitimacy of the Obama presidency.

It seemed the White House changed tunes today "Walkin' on Sunshine" to "Ain't No Sunshine."

This (Wednesday) was the day President Obama was to receive an award marking Sunshine Week - an initiative meant to promote openness and transparency in government.

The White House posted the award event on Mr. Obama's public schedule for 2:55PM and even intended to give the White House press pool a photo-op of the award presentation by representatives of the Freedom of Information Day Conference.

But suddenly, as the press waited for its escort to the Oval Office for the event, the White House changed its mind and sheepishly put out the word that the sunshine event was scrubbed for the day and would be rescheduled for sometime in the future.

To explain, a White House aide pointed to changes in the president's schedule. But the unexpected cancellation came just after press secretary Jay Carney ended a press briefing where he was peppered for 50 minutes with tough questions about the president's responses to the situations in Japan, Libya and Bahrain.

Carney was also asked to provide evidence that Mr. Obama actually deserved to receive an award for openness in government.

Carney seemed to know this would be a rough day. He began his daily press briefing with the lament: "I'm waiting for my first slow news day on this job. It's not today."

Carney faced questions about why the Administration waited till now, Day 6 of the Japanese nuclear emergency, to urge Americans to evacuate an area within a 50-mile radius of the damaged reactors.

He was repeatedly asked to explain why the White House has not acted more aggressively to pressure Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi to step down from power.

Carney had answers for each of the questions, but not easy ones.

By scrapping the Sunshine Week award photo op, the White House spared the president from possibly facing shouted questions on those very issues from members of the press pool.

Just yesterday, Mr. Obama sat for three interviews with local TV news reporters from stations in political battleground states deemed indispensable to his hopes for re-election: Pennsylvania, Virginia and New Mexico.

But criticism of his responses to Libya, Japan, Bahrain and getting a budget deal has been growing among members of Congress and pundits.

It served the White House's political objective to keep such criticism out of the sunshine by protecting Mr. Obama from questions about such issues. At least for today.

President Obama’s only event at the White House that isn’t closed to the press on Wednesday is a ceremony in which he’ll accept an award for being open to the press.

According to his public schedule, Obama has four behind-closed-doors meetings from 10 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.: his daily briefing, a talk with the USAID administrator, a session with senior advisers, and a huddle with his defense secretary. All of the meets are in the Oval Office, and all of them are “closed press,” the White House says.

But at 2:55 p.m., Obama will emerge to “accept an award from a coalition of good government groups and transparency advocates to recognize ‘his deep commitment to an open and transparent government—of, by, and for the people’ in conjunction with Sunshine Week,” the White House said in guidance to reporters.

And, importantly: “There will be a pool spray at the top.”

The White House didn’t specify what Obama will say, if anything, when he accepts the award. But he probably won’t mention that his administration acted on fewer requests for information last year even as it was asked for more, a tally documented by the AP.
